Sometimes runners like to dress up on race day. I've been participating in Disney races since 2016, and it's always a lot of fun to dress up for those events.

It doesn't have to been a Disney race for runners to wear costumes, though. Some races are famous for their costumed runners, like Bay to Breakers. Turkey Trots and Christmas races attract a lot of casual runners and walkers, and a lot of fun holiday costumes. And of course it's a lot of fun to dress up a Halloween race!

For the Star Wars race weekends at Walt Disney World, I would usually run all three events: a 5K; followed by a 10K; followed by a half marathon. For the 5K race I liked to be silly and dress up as a non-Star Wars character. Star Trek always seemed like a great option. It was extra fun when interacting with official runDisney characters as well as members of the 501st on the course -- a lot of those 501sties are Star Trek fans, too!

During the Dark Side 5K in 2018, I dressed up as a Discovery medical officer. (You can read my race report here: 2018 Star Wars Dark Side 5K). Here's what you'll need to recreate this fun and easy running costume outfit look.

Star Trek Discovery Costume T-Shirt

Found on Amazon

This sublimated costume t-shirt was perfect for my needs. The Discovery uniform shirt comes in several different colors, including designs for command officers, science officers, and engineering officers (all blue with different detailing).

This is a polyester shirt with sublimation all-over printing so it looks great, but it's not very lightweight and it's not moisture-wicking. It was a relatively cool (for Florida, in April) morning for the race, so I opted to wear a white long sleeve tech shirt under this costume shirt. That gave me the look of wearing a long sleeve uniform top. This way I was also able to keep warm while standing around waiting for the start of the race, and cool once it was time to start running.

White Running Skirt or Running Pants or Shorts

Found on Amazon

For my race, I wore a white SparkleSkirt that I had in my closet already. Any white bottoms would work well with this costume, like this affordable white running skirt with shorts attached. If you go with shorts or pants, make sure they're not see through... or be sure to choose your undergarments wisely!

If you end up liking this particular skirt, it comes in different colors and cuts so you could get more to have on hand for future costume runs.

DIY White Star Trek Discovery DISCO Visor

Found on Amazon

I really like Headsweats visors, so I did a little crafting to make a plain white Headsweats visor into a costume hat for this outfit. I used dark blue felt letters to spell out DISCO, for Discovery, on the front of the visor.

Warning! The following post contains mild spoilers for the fourth episode of season three of Star Trek: Discovery, Forget Me Not.

The episode finds the Discovery traveling to Trill to follow whatever clues may lie within Adira, a new crew-mate with a mysterious past. As that plays out, the rest of the crew struggles with their own new lives so far in the unfamiliar future.

Mid-episode, at Saru's dinner party, Philippa Georgiou recites a short poem, which Hugh Culber recognizes as haiku.

Haiku is a form of poetry that originated in Japan. The traditional American English interpretation of these short form poems has three lines, with 5, 7, and 5 syllables, or sound units, which are called On in Japanese. They don't have to rhyme.

This is what Georgiou says, which seems to come out of nowhere at the dinner party.

kelp dries in the sun
an existential crisis
is there some dessert

Hugh gives the art form a try before some others give it a go, to mixed success and reaction.

Emperor Georgiou
feasting on the finest cuts
snarfs cookies on the down-low

Unfortunately, tensions rise at the table as others try their own haiku. Things come to a head when Detmer is cajoled into participating; she ends up insulting Stamets and breaking up the gathering.

I enjoyed this episode! Here are some quick reaction thoughts.

physically sound
but not quote unquote healthy
the crew needs a break

I thought was a good idea to have Culber narrating the opening, as both story-lines in this episode deal with the health of crew members. It was a nice setup for what was to come.

a miracle, yes?
Trill abomination, no?
she's Adira Tal!

I like how this story line played out. The writers did a great job getting in Adira's rather complicated backstory as a kind of reluctant and atypical Trill against the backdrop of the troubles the entire universe is facing after The Burn.

Saru's slow "hello"
seeks advice to help his crew
he knows its the sphere

It's interesting that Saru is still struggling in his leadership role. He does a great job displaying strength to the crew and adversaries while privately he still has self-doubt. I like how that keeps playing out.

pilots are macho
the pressure takes a hard toll
Keyla is not fine

admitting struggle
finding courage to reach out
seeking help is hard

I was getting worried about Detmer's obvious distress displayed in the last couple of episodes. I love how Star Trek has brought up mental health as an important part of overall health. It's been on the national social radar for some years now, but the pandemic this year has brought it even more into focus.

adult coloring
interstellar shopping spree
Buster Keaton rules

The suggested relaxation activities made me laugh out loud. Being a long-time fan of Buster Keaton, I was extremely excited to hear the computer mention showing movies by The Great Stone Face to help alleviate crew anxiety. Having everyone rolling around laughing at classic Keaton physical comedy was an awesome surprise.
